Bourbon blues on the street, loose and complete
Under skies all smokey blue-green
I can’t forsake a Dixie-dead shake
So we danced the sidewalk cleanMy memory is muddy, what’s this river that I’m in?
New Orleans is sinking, man, and I don’t wanna swimColonel Tom, what’s wrong? What’s goin’ on?
Can’t tie yourself up for a deal?
He said, “Hey, North, you’re south, shut your big mouth
You gotta do what you feel is real”Ain’t got no picture postcards, ain’t got no souvenirs
My baby, she don’t know me when I’m thinkin’ ’bout those yearsPale as a light bulb, hangin’ on a wire
Suckin’ up to someone just to stoke the fire
Checkin’ out the highlights of the scenery
Saw a little cloud that looked a little like meI had my hands in the river, my feet back up on the banks
I looked up to the Lord Above and said, “Hey, man, thanks”
Sometimes I feel so good I gotta scream
She said, “Gordie baby, I know exactly what you mean”
She said, she said
I swear to God, she saidOhhhhhhhhhhh, no
Ohhhhhhhhhhh, yeah
My memory is muddy, what’s this river that I’m in?
New Orleans is sinking, man, and I don’t wanna swim
Swim!God, what a mess.
Every time I’ve gone to check my E-mail this past week, I’ve been
greeted with pictures and horror stories of Katrina’s wrath. I don’t
know what hurt worse – thinking of the people who have been hit the
hardest by this catastrophe, or being under pain of awareness that
there was little else I could do besides pray. Thankfully there are
plenty of stores in my area that are engaged in relief efforts, as well
as my church; I planted the last of my pocket cash in the International
Orthodox Christian Charity collection as it was the best I could do at
the time.Boy, am I glad payday is this week…my greatest regret right now is
that I have but one drop to toss in the bucket for those poor folk down
south. God, grant them a night’s rest and some peace of mind in the
days to come.

FWIW, I’ve heard that for every dollar you give to IOCC, it becomes $9 due to matching grants that they have from a variety of sources. They are also the best charity to give through, since 90% of monies raised goes directly to where it’s needed. (At the Red Cross, it’s just 50%, and the rest goes for administrative costs and other “overhead.”) Your “drop in the bucket” is multiplied by nine.
katrina has been pretty bad. I know that all those displaced are now looking for jobs and schools in the surrounding states. We actually have some people that’ll be coming to USF and hopefully we’ll be able to accomodate them in the best ways possible. Its pretty outrageous that the response to this disaster hasn’t been swift enough. like MrsMutton was mentioning, giving to the red cross is a scam and if they’ve raised over 51 million and only given fifty percent? I believe the exact number as of 12 noon today was $51,859,605. Only 25 million to those in need? No, thats ridiculous. If this hurricane had touched down in rich ass white folk FL, the relief would not take more than 3 weeks tops, and clean up could ensue. As it is, the white rich were not effected ( can’t you just see my affinty for them?) and therefore they do not care. If ever the American public should respond to something, it should be the lack of justice served to them on a silver platter. Ok, and now I’ll jump off my soap box….
as for me, I’m actually doing great. Normally I wouldn’t say so, as I’m a ‘romantic fatalist’ by definition. the title was given to me by a friend. don’t ask.
So yeah, I’m alive, well, classes are killing me already, and junior year looks to be good. stuff happens, but in the end, most of it is of no real consequence.
glad to have you back and all. are you covered in soot when you go home everyday? if so, what does your car look like inside? hey, as long as you love it.

yeah, I’ll be over in the NJ area, Newark, I believe. Or close enough to it anyway; I’m landing there? Does that count? My cousin also lives up there (Atlantic City), but I’m not going to see her and won’t be staying but for the weekend. I don’t believe I have extra time, but if I did, I’m sure going to PA would be lovely. I’ve always had this plan that when I got a reliable car, I’d traverse up north to go to Hershey. And yes, for the chocolate factory. My grandparents have vacationed to PA before and say its beautiful. I’m also planning on attending Penn State for grad school, but thats on the horizon, so…we’ll see. And don’t worry, I won’t be driving when I get to NJ. Someone else is. So I get to be passive and frightened in the passenger seat. Whereas I would so be aggressive and enraged behind the wheel. What? You don’t think we have enough tourists and snowbirds down here? I know exactly of what you speak!
where did you go to college? I always forget you’re older. Aren’t you in your 40s now?!? Hahah, I kid. Seriously, just joking.

Just got a letter from IOCC to tell us that our contribution paid for food and other necessities (diapers, toiletries, formula) for 300 people, *and* counselling for firefighters and police officers. Yeah, we were able to send a substantial contribution, but what we sent could never have paid for all that by itself — so like I said, whatever you send, multiply that by $10, because every dollar you send gets them $9 more. IOCC *rocks.*
(BTW, it’s not necessarily true that if rich white folks had been involved, the financial aid would have been a lot faster on the uptake. There *are* a lot of rich white folks in the New Orleans area, as well as in Biloxi and other areas affected by Katrina. And no one seems to remember that when Missouri was flooded out about ten years ago, FEMA took something like a *month* to get its butt in gear. When reading news reports, you gotta keep the big agenda in mind — bash the Establishment, at whatever cost.)
